The Watchtowers Treatment of the Church Fathers: Justin Martyr
In the Watchtower (Jehovah Witnesses) book called “Should You Believe in the Trinity “, the claim is made that Justin called the pre-human Jesus a created angel and distinct from the God who created all things. (p.7) While the historic Christian Faith rest on the Bible alone and not on the Fathers, the Watchtowers treatment of these ancient authors needs to be juxtaposed against reality. What did Justin actually say?
“The Father of the universe has a son; who also being the first begotten Word of God is even God. And of old he appeared in the shape of fire and in the likeness of an angel to Moses and the other prophets.” (1)
See Exodus 3:2-7, excerpt; “..God called to him from the midst of the bush…and said, I am the God of your father- the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”
Justin also called the Christ, “both God and the Lord of Host”,(2) as well as making other equally clear affirmations of his faith in the Deity of Christ.
