Created Angel or Creator of Angels? Hebrews 1:5-12
Despite the fact we are told many times in Scripture that Jesus created all things and are even told in the Greek in John 1:3 that, “not one thing that was made was made without Him”, some people still insist that Jesus was merely a created angel. Some groups like to think he was Michael the Arc angel, because they see Michael as the highest angel. However the Scripture in Daniel 10:13 reveals that Michael is,”one of the chief princes”, among the angels, not necessarily the chief of them all..
The first chapter of Hebrews gives us quite a few clues about who Jesus is, in direct comparison to the angels. For example vs.5 says,” For to which of the angels did He ever say, You are my son, today I have begotten you?” Or in vs.6,”Let all the angels of God worship him.” These verses are interesting in themselves, but in verses 7 through 12 the writer of Hebrews, probably Paul, deliberately quotes Old Testament verses, some about angels and others that he insists were written about The Son, Jesus. He does this to make clear the distinction between the nature of angels and the nature of “The Son”.
He says in vs.7, “And of angels he says, He makes his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire”. However in comparison the next verse says, ” But to the Son He says: Your throne oh God is forever and ever…” [Ps. 45]. Paul then adds another Old Testament scripture,which he clearly implys is written to and about Christ;
Vs.10, “And: You Lord, in the beginning laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They well perish, but you remain; and they will all grow old like a garment, like a cloak you will fold them up, and they will be changed. But You are the same and Your years will not fail.”. Paul here has quoted an Old Testament Psalm [Ps 102:25-27] that could have been written only of the one true Creator God of the universe, and applies it without reservation to “The Son”, Jesus Christ.
Created angel? I don’t think so. Rather, Jesus was and is the Creator of the angels. Because He is the Lord and Creator of the entire universe who remains the same even as all creation is wearing out. And that’s why we and all the angels of God can worship Him.
