Extreme Geological Layering: Whoops, wrong order

The vast majority of the Earth is missing many of the layers which are interpreted as the Geological Column. But in some places, it gets extreme. For instance at Mt. Yamnuska in Alberta, Canada and the Tien Shan Mountains in Russia. There some of the “oldest” layers rest on top of some of the very youngest, with all of rest missing in action.

 As it said in the Science News 98, in an article called “Mountain building in the Meditarranean”, Oct. 17 1970,

“In many places , the oceanic sediments of which mountains are composed are inverted, with the older resting on the younger.”

“Visually, the mountain appears as a sheer, almost vertical face of limestone overlying a softer bed of shale. These sheer cliffs are part of the Eldon Formation limestones. They were formed approximately 535 million years ago during the Cambrian. By contrast, the underlying shales are virtual newborns at 75 million years. They are part of the same formation that yields an almost endless supply of dinosaur fossils in places like Dinosaur Provincial Park. In normal depositional environments, layers of sedimentary rock are laid down one atop the other, like the pages of a book. This leads to the normal assumption that layers near the top should be younger than those beneath. Geologists refer to this as the Principle of Superposition. Quite literally, it means that the rocks on the top should be the youngest. This orderly arrangement is often upset in the Rockies where layers of old rocks may be thrust atop their younger neighbours. The layers may move great distances before resting at their present locations.”

  This explanation, ” the layers may move great distances ” really doesn’t solve a lot of the problems for Lyelliian geology and the hundreds of millions of years. Moving mountain layers involves great friction and the associated heat which should and does leave telltale evidence where overthrust has happened. This type of evidence  is often lacking in the Rockies…as well as the millions of years represented by the “missing layers” . The article fails to mention that not only are the oldest layers resting on the youngest layers, but all the in between layers are missing too.

Secular media presentations on mountain building and ages also usually fail to inform their veiwers of the existence of turbidites, layers of underwater mudflows caused by catastrophic conditions, which are found in almost all the great mountain ranges of the world. For example, the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps has a turbidity layer allmost 500 feet thick…somthing so catastrophic in nature that its original cause is beyond our imagination….unless you consider the Noachian Flood.

This appears to support the idea that the various stratigraphic layers represent ecological zones buried under catastrophic conditions, rather than long ages. Below is an artists conception of the mountains, to help visualize the layering events talked about.


You’ll notice at Mt. Yamnuska, the Cambrian, considered the oldest,  sccond only to the pre-cambrian, resting on the Cretaceous, a very young layer according to Lyell’s interpretation of the geological column.

So the next time you hear a narrator parrot off the “millions of years”, try to force yourself to remember, that what you’re hearing isn’t fact, but pre-supposition…no matter how many times they repeat it. You are being exposed to a ongoing process of indoctrination, and you need to make a concious effort to resist it.
