Evolutionists, when piqued at those who believe in a supernatural creation, have sometimes accused them of being worshipers of “the god of the gaps”. I can’t help but find this humorous, as it was the god of evolution, Charles Darwin, who couldn’t explain the gaps, the gaps belong to evolutionists.
The book of Genesis clearly states that the God of the Hebrews created every creature, and commanded them to reproduce after their own kind, No where does Scripture say, “let there be gaps, and there were gaps.” He created the kinds. Therefore creationists have no need to explain the gaps in the fossil record or among the living orders of creatures.
It was the god of evolution, Charles Darwin who first insisted that all animals should be linked to other animals by intermediate forms and lamented the fact that the paleontologists were so slow in finding them. He asked;
“Why then is not every geological formation and every stratum full of such intermediate links?” He then answered himself, “The explanation, as I believe, is in the extreme imperfection of the fossil record.” (Darwin, Charles, The Origin of Species, p.406)
The imperfections have persisted;” Well, we are now about 120 years after Darwin, and the knowledge of the fossil record has been greatly expanded… But the situation hasn’t changed much…We have even fewer examples of evolutionary transition then we had in Darwin’s time.” David Raup, paleontologist, Chicago Museum of Natural History, Bulletin 50 (1)’ ‘79
The gaps went un-noticed until Darwin’s theory was contrived and nature failed to fill them. So Darwin brought the gap “problem” into existence, and then, much like a cheap imitation of the God of Genesis, he demanded that the gaps be filled. From the Piltdown man to the Archeoraptor his followers have dutifully tried to fill the gaps but they stubbornly persisted.
The God of the book of Genesis created all His “nested hierarchies” or kinds, in 6 days. It has been over 152 years since the god of evolution demanded the gaps to be filled, but they remain gaps. As David Kitts of the University of Oklahoma said;
“Despite the bright promise that paleontology provides a means of “seeing” evolution, it has presented some nasty difficulties for evolutionists, the most notorious of which is the presence of gaps in the fossil record.” (Kitts, Paleontology and Evolutionary Theory, Evolution 28, Sept. 74, 467)
Clearly it wasn’t paleontology that created difficulties, the rocks or fossils are just the data; as Kitts bemoans, it was the theory of evolution that created the nasty difficulties, the worse of which is the gaps in the fossil record. Remove the evolutionary theory and there is no longer any need to explain why the gaps aren’t chock full of intermediate body parts and species. And Charles Darwin created the theory of evolution. He therefore is the god of the gaps. It’s not the creationist’s job to explain or explain away the gaps (punctuated equilibrium, imperfect fossil record), that remains for the followers of Darwin. He is their god and the gaps are theirs.
